Innovation and investment steering Mediterranean green shipping.

Green Marine Med

A Mediterranean network of ports, industry, investment, and innovation for monitoring and technology foresight on sustainable maritime transport.

General objective

The general objective of the project is to connect key stakeholders across the Mediterranean maritime ecosystem — including ports, shipping operators, industry, innovation hubs, and financial actors — to assess the current status of green shipping, facilitate access to innovative and sustainable solutions, boost investment, and establish a long-term monitoring and technology foresight network. The initiative promotes North–South knowledge exchange, supports startups and SMEs, and leads to the creation of a Centre of Excellence to ensure lasting impact beyond the project’s duration.

Technologies

  • Green fuels and propulsion
  • Port electrification and cold ironing
  • Digital Twin and predictive modelling
  • Smart shipping and route optimization
  • Green finance tools

Objectives

Consolidate the Mediterranean Green Shipping Community

Mobilize stakeholders across the full green shipping value chain—vessels, ports, fuels, energy, finance, innovation—to foster collaboration on sustainability.

Monitoring and technology foresight

Build a regional network that tracks developments and anticipates technological innovation in green shipping.

Support entrepreneurs and startups

Empower new ventures through accelerators and business support programs tailored to the green shipping sector.

 Launch an International Innovation Call

Issue targeted calls to encourage SMEs and startups to drive breakthrough solutions in ports and shipping.

Focus on Innovation, Training & Sustainable Financing

Enable post-project scalability through innovation support, capacity-building, and finance networks for best practice exchange.

Establish a Center of Excellence

Maintain the network via the World Ocean Council by creating a Mediterranean Green Shipping Center of Excellence.

Scope

Northern Mediterranean countries

Spain, France, Italy, Greece
(EU Member States with major ports and shipping industries).

Southern & Eastern Mediterranean countries

Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Türkiye, Israel
(key for regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and innovation uptake).

Wider regional scope

The project is aligned with EU Mediterranean strategies, such as the EU’s Sustainable Blue Economy agenda and Interreg NEXT MED logic, which promotes transnational cooperation in the Mediterranean Sea basin.

Innovative factor

The innovative factor of the GREEN MARINE MED project lies in its integrated, cross-sectoral, and cross-regional approach to advancing green shipping in the Mediterranean. It does not focus on a single technology or solution, but rather on creating a system-wide framework for collaboration, foresight, and sustainable transition.
