DIGI SAFE CAGE: develops digital solutions to manage the risks of ocean aquaculture infrastructure.

The main objective of this project is to minimise the economic, environmental and social impact of cage losses and escapes caused by infrastructure failures and breakages, through the design, testing and validation of a novel digital system for monitoring marine cage infrastructure to manage the risks associated with losses and escapes. The innovative system is based on the implementation of a digital twin of the cages, integrating the latest communication technologies such as IoT, Cloud, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, among others. The system should also facilitate management with insurers in order to guarantee coverage in the event of an accident.

Objective and expected impact of the project:

    • Specific objective 1: Analysis of the main causes of risks associated with cage losses and escapes, as well as the critical parameters that can be monitored to ensure proper control of these risks.
    • Specific objective 2: Integration of equipment for the sensorisation of aquaculture cages and associated infrastructure. The equipment will have different communication protocols, both for data management at farm level and to enable real-time monitoring from land of all sensorised parameters through long-range communication technologies, including access to pre-existing and cloud-based databases.
    • Specific objective 3: Development of a digital twin of the structural integrity of aquaculture cages. On the one hand, it will include techniques for simulating structural stresses and deformations based on theoretical models validated with real-time monitored data. On the other hand, it will include the development of analysis, correlation and prediction techniques based on advanced statistics, Artificial Vision and Artificial Intelligence, specifically Machine Learning and Neural Networks.
    • Specific objective 4: Validation of the solution through the deployment of equipment and the application of the digital twin in a real pilot consisting of a cage on an aquaculture farm.
    • Specific objective 5: Dissemination and communication of the results, ensuring acceptance by insurance agencies and improving society’s sustainable view of aquaculture.

Duration: December 2021 – October 2023

DIGI SAFE CAGE awarded the JACUMAR 2024 prize The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has awarded the JACUMAR 2024 prize to the project «Development of a digital model for escape management – Digi Safe Cage». This decision was based on CTN’s ability to develop a digital system capable of remotely managing facilities and detecting faults or breakages that may occur in ocean aquaculture infrastructure in a timely manner. JACUMAR Award The JACUMAR award has become a fundamental pillar for promoting and supporting research in the field of aquaculture. Its objective is to strengthen relations between the scientific community and producers, with a special focus on small and medium-sized enterprises. For CTN, this award is recognition of the innovative work carried out by the Centre within the aquaculture sector.CTN is a hub of open innovation focused on developing technologies that help this sector overcome the major challenges it faces, such as climate change and food security.
